RAV Counselling Appointment: How to Prepare (2026 Guide)
If you are registered as unemployed in Switzerland, the counselling and monitoring interview is a fixture of the whole process: every few weeks you sit down with your personal advisor and talk through your job search. For many people it feels like an exam — but it is, above all, an opportunity. Turn up prepared and you get more out of it and avoid needless follow-up questions.
This guide explains what to expect at your RAV counselling appointment, which documents to bring, how to prepare the substance, and the mistakes that can cost you penalty days. At the end you will see, honestly, how ApplyCH makes the preparation easier.
What is the RAV counselling appointment?
The counselling appointment (officially the «counselling and monitoring interview») is the regular meeting with your advisor at the Regional Employment Centre (RAV in German-speaking Switzerland, ORP in the French-speaking cantons, URC in Ticino). The name points to its two sides: counselling — your advisor supports your search, discusses strategy, further training and possible labour-market measures; and monitoring — they check that you are meeting your obligations, above all your monthly proof of work efforts.
The appointment is mandatory. Missing it without a valid reason risks penalty days (Einstelltage) — reductions of your unemployment benefit. But do not see the meeting only as a check: your advisor knows the regional job market, can point you to suitable vacancies and can approve measures that improve your chances.
How often does it happen — and what is the format?
How often you are invited is set individually by your advisor; meetings roughly every four to eight weeks are common. You receive the invitation in writing or electronically, with the date, place and time. Arrive on time — lateness and absences are noted.
A typical meeting lasts 30 to 60 minutes and usually follows the same pattern: a look back at the past month and your applications, a discussion of specific vacancies and any assignments, a review of your strategy and next steps, and — where useful — courses or programmes. It often ends with goals agreed for the coming period.
The documents you should bring
Being well prepared means having the right documents to hand. Bring:
- the invitation to the appointment and a valid ID;
- your current proof of work efforts — the applications for the current month and, if requested, the previous one;
- the responses to your applications (interviews, rejections, pending status), especially for any RAV assignments;
- an up-to-date CV and, if you have them, records of any further training;
- a short list of your questions — about measures, courses, interim earnings or deadlines.
The more completely your work efforts are documented, the smoother the monitoring part runs — and the more time is left for the counselling itself.
How to prepare the substance
Documents alone are not enough — think in advance about what you want to say. Be ready to explain your search strategy: which sectors and regions, which workload, which roles are you targeting? Run through your recent applications so you can say something about each one — that comes across as active and credible.
Set out your own requests too: do you need a language course, a career assessment or help with your CV? The meeting is the right place to raise such measures. And report changes proactively — holidays, illness, interim earnings or an upcoming interview all belong on the table.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning up unprepared. If you no longer know your own applications, you look passive — and invite questions.
- Too few or incomplete work efforts. Missing company addresses or too few entries are the most common point of dispute and can trigger penalty days.
- Missing the appointment. An unexcused absence is a breach of duty. If you cannot attend, notify the RAV beforehand and with a valid reason.
- Staying passive. Your advisor is a resource. Those who ask questions and make suggestions usually get more support.
- Ignoring assignments. You must apply for an assigned vacancy and document the outcome — otherwise you risk sanctions.
